Chokolit, the Shropshire based confectionary company, moved to a new base in Shropshire after outgrowing its old location. Previously, the company was based at the home of its founder, Louis Barnett, who started up the company in 2005 when he was just 11 years old!
Louis discovered his passion for working with chocolate while at school, after buying a book, “Belgian Chocolate Cakes and Chocolate", from a local garden centre. Having found dyslexia and dyspraxia hindered his school education, he left early to pursue his dream of becoming a licensed chocolatier.
Young entrepreneur
Louis went on to become the youngest ever supplier to the national supermarkets, Waitrose and Sainsbury, winning awards for his early entrepreneurship.
He has also taken up some social, ethical and environmental issues weaving them into how he runs his business. Chokolit has developed nine Biting Back Bars™, in collaboration with conservation charities including Chester Zoo, David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation and National Geographic Explorers in Residence. A charitable donation is made each time a bar is sold.
Demand for new premises
The high demand for Chokolit’s products meant the company needed to ‘leave home’. Louis said: “After having a meeting with buyers from Sainsbury’s we decided that we needed a larger unit to produce our chocolates and started looking for premises, that’s how we found ourselves to be in Bridgnorth.”
Since the move, the company hasn’t looked back. It has received media attention at home and abroad, and the company plans to continue to expand and export its chocolates around the world. A West Midlands address offers vital import and export links for the business - as well as the advantages of being surrounded by beautiful countryside.
Louis, said: “It was such a treat to find a unit close to home and in such a wonderful area that suited our needs.”
He highlights a particular advantage of working in Shropshire: “Our drive to work is effortless, so when we all arrive everyone is in a good mood having not been stuck in traffic for half an hour.”
