Quality of life and its reputation for having a good pool of expertise in the environmental services sector is reinforcing Shrewsbury’s attractions to one of the UK’s largest environmental and engineering consultancies. Entec UK Ltd, which has 800 staff in 14 offices around the UK, has one of its largest offices in Shrewsbury.
The company provides environmental and engineering consultancy services - such as water engineering, risk management, development planning, renewable power and energy services, waste management and environmental appraisal - to a range of clients in the UK and abroad.
Entec’s original presence in Shrewsbury began in the 1980’s as a specialist groundwater consultancy called Hydrotechnica. But it was Shropshire’s own beautiful environment - which suited the personal interests of the directors, in particular their outdoor pursuits - that decided them to locate in Shrewsbury.
“The prime benefit of Shrewsbury is that it is a pleasant location in which to live offering the benefits of easy access to attractive countryside and close proximity to the West Midlands region,” says Dr Ian Fletcher, an Entec director.
He adds: “The location helps in attracting and retaining staff. Our staff retention is significantly better than the industry norm for this sector, particularly in Shrewsbury. Because the area has become a hub for environmental consultancy businesses it provides a broader resource pool for both recruitment and project support.”
The West Midlands region is also among the best-located regions in the UK, for road, rail and air links, with relatively low property prices and a skilled labour force.
The Shrewsbury office, which started with around 20 staff in 1990, has grown to around 120 staff today. Dr Fletcher says of the future: “Our aim is to continue to grow Entec’s business ahead of general market growth in the sectors in which we operate and to continue to enhance our reputation as one of the UK’s Top five environmental and engineering consultancies.”
