Around 1000 companies are active in the waste management industry in the region ranging from large UK and international waste management businesses to suppliers of specialist waste technology such as recycling, composting and waste to energy plants.

Market Opportunity

The economies of scale often required in the resource recovery, recycling and waste to energy sectors mean that choosing the right location is essential. With easy road and rail access to the rest of the UK, a concentration of large urban population centres (7 million people within 1 hour of the centre of Birmingham) and a strong manufacturing and industrial base, the region offers a convenient, well connected and cost effective central location for nation-wide resource recovery and recycling operations. Working in partnership with local organisations, the region additionally offers:

  • Availability of resource – the West Midlands branch of the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) can provide companies in the region with access to information on the availability of waste resources by specific location, volume and European Waste Catalogue Number.

  • The right location and a favourable planning environment – by working with local planning and development departments, companies can identify potentially suitable locations within the region much earlier in the business planning process.
