Waste and Waste to Energy

The economies of scale often required in the resource recovery, recycling and waste to energy sectors mean that choosing the right location is essential. With easy road and rail access to the rest of the UK, a concentration of large urban population centres (7 million people within 1 hour of the centre of Birmingham) and a strong manufacturing and industrial base, the region offers a convenient, well connected and cost effective central location for nation-wide resource recovery and recycling operations. Working in partnership with local organisations, the region additionally offers:

• Availability of resource – the West Midlands branch of the National Industrial Symbiosis Programme (NISP) can provide companies in the region with access to information on the availability of waste resources by specific location, volume and European Waste Catalogue Number.

• The right location and a favourable planning environment – by working with local planning and development departments, companies can identify potentially suitable locations within the region much earlier in the business planning process.

The Heart of England has whole host of organisations conducting research into the area of Waste and Waste to Energy which will take this area forward in the future :

• Aston University Bioenergy Research Group is one of the largest university-based research groups in thermal biomass conversion in the world. Aston is also home to the European Bioenergy Research Institute (EBRI) which promotes and manages the implementation of bioenergy technologies at a local, national and

• The Institute for Environment, Sustainability and Regeneration at Staffordshire University, provides both research and consultancy services on major forms of atmospheric, water and terrestrial pollution and remediation, including legal compliance and management.

• Bioenergy West Midlands promotes interest and activity in, and markets for bioenergy and the development of a regional bioenergy supply chain.
  

The waste sector is a key priority within the region and plans are being developed on waste management infrastructure. £5.5 million is being invested in initiatives to support supply chain improvement, technology development and market exploitation.

Local companies can access funding through a number of different channels to help them meet the challenges the industry must face in diverting waste
from landfill. These include:

• The Waste Resources Action Programme (WRAP)

• Grant for Business Investment (GBI).
